I am a 57 year old Irishman, one of the least likely Zumba Instructors to roam the dance floor. I assure you none of my students come to class in the hope that I might just take off my shirt ! But I have a great love and passion for Zumba, as well as a tremendous feeling of gratitude for what it has done for me.
Following rehabilitation for an injury, after decades of inactivity, I got bored fast in the gym with the ellipticals and such. I kept seeing the Zumba class, looking like so much fun. But it was all females, almost all much younger than me, and they were so graceful. I knew I didn't "fit in". After many times stopping at the window and longing to be a part of the fun, I finally walked through the fear and joined them.
I was like a "buffalo dancing among the swans" but had so much fun I didn't really care. The instructor took the time after class to encourage me to keep coming back, and I did. She eventually talked me into taking the Zumba Basics training, only as a way of getting a better feel for Zumba as a student. Once I had attended that training, she started working to get me to teach. At first just a song in her class .... then two .... then three .... then "how about subbing ?"
I now teach several classes a week, and am in the best shape of my life. Although I must admit that the Master Class with Luis - 16,000 steps in two hours ! - left me with very sore calves for a few days. A small price to pay for that much fun.
Viva Zumba !
